“I never heard from Cherry again, nor did I ever seek him out. All these years later, I like to picture Cherry having really raucous and funny sex, with boys who deserve him, with a wide smile replacing that tight grimace. I’d like Cherry to know that under other circumstances, I’d have paid him for a taste of his sweet heaven. So here’s to Cherry, my star pupil and my favorite sweet pulpy tangy juicy little drupe.”

Pros(e) was the original title of the journal of the Red Umbrella Project, now called Prose & Lore. Three short pieces appear in Issue I, the inaugural edition, edited by Melissa Petro. “Vitis Vinifera ‘Fantasy”, “Cali Boy”, and “A Dialog, Gouverneur Street, NYC”. 2012.
from “Cali Boy”:
I lost him, my twitchy, hot-running, gangly body all knees and elbows, hapless homebody, computer nerd, talisman collector, game-playing geek boy, with skin redolent of skate parks and sugar and dew. My not-particularly-my-type Cali boy’s bright, unsteady blue eyes are now reflecting some crooked man’s light two thousand, eight hundred and twenty-seven miles away. I would walk for one thousand hours– hike mountain passes, cross plains, cut through forests, and trudge deserts– for a fix.
“One doesn’t have to have nursed an unnamed lover back from withdrawal to appreciate Dominick’s beautiful cadence in ‘Cali Boy’, but we can recognize the echoes of being addicted not to a drug, but a person.” – Claire Litton
After appearing on the podcast, Dan Savage passed a question on to me from a straight guy wanting to be an escort, for women. Despite my discouraging comments (“There is no gigolo industry…”), I received hundreds of inquiries from all over the world from men wanting to be straight male escorts.
“…pursue a profession with the potential to bring you into contact with a wealthy female clientele—business consultant, art handler—and be exceptionally good and loving to all the women in your life.”
Appeared as a “guest expert.” Some choice moments:
“If you’re looking for a straight-identified or bisexual-identified male sex worker on rentboy, you might want to take into account that many of the escorts list themselves as straight or bi are gay. They are full-on cocksucking, legs-in-the-air, ass-fucked gay. It’s the mythical allure of straight trade is so strong, that many of these escorts…they’re employing marketing.”
“From the escorts, I get a lot questions regarding logistics, and the closing of the deal, and how to market themselves. It’s amazing to me that some of these young guys aren’t as internet-savvy as you’d think they’d be, considering that sex work has really migrated online…”
From the clients, I get the most poignant, heartfelt questions about what to do with their relationship with and escort that they one to change from a transactional one to one of a more romantic nature. It’s challenging for me to parse that, to navigate that…I don’t want to tell them… they’re looking for love in all the wrong places, because there is no wrong place to look for love… but you have to be realistic.”
